Pain, Functional Limitation and Sleep Pattern among Diabetic Geriatric Patients with Peripheral Neuropathy

Abstract

Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of the most debilitating complications of diabetes mellitus that leading to disability especially among geriatric patients . Aim: Assess pain, functional limitation and sleep pattern among diabetic geriatric patients with peripheral neuropathy. Design: A descriptive research design was utilized in this study Setting: Geriatric outpatient clinic of the specialized Medical Hospital at Mansoura University .Subjects: A convenience sample of 155 geriatric patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Tools: Four tools were used to collect data; Structured Interview Schedule, Health Related Data, Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questionnaire , Screening Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Key results: Neuropathic pain, poor sleep quality were prevailing among the studied diabetic peripheral neuropathy geriatric patients with 89% and 84.5% respectively . Also,29% of the studied diabetic geriatric patients had severe functional limitation .A highly statistically significant positive relation Was found between neuropathic pain, functional limitation and sleep quality. Conclusion: The majority of the studied diabetic peripheral neuropathy geriatric patients had neuropathic pain, functional limitation and poor sleep quality. Recommendation: Designing an educational program on diabetic peripheral neuropathy among geriatric patients through emphasizing on its management and healthy lifestyle.
