Socio-demographic and Clinical profile of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder in an Egyptian Sample

Abstract

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric illness and is the largest contributor to the disease burden caused by poor mental health owing to its high prevalence, high recurrence rates, chronicity, and comorbidity with physical illness. The study aims to assess socio-demographic and clinical profile of patients with major depressive disorders in an Egyptian Sample. Subjects and method: A descriptive cross sectional study design was utilized with a sample of 60 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorders admitted psychiatry Inpatient Department at Mansoura University Hospital. Data was collected using two tools: socio-demographic characteristics and clinical data sheet and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) scale. Results: Result in this study revealed that nearly half (48.3%) of studied patients were in age group between 30 to 45 years old. More than half of the studied patients were females, live in rural areas, and had no adherence to medication (55%), (55%), and (53.4%) respectively. About half of the studied patients were (46.7%) illiterate or read and write. More than one third (40 %) of studied patients reported that they were single or divorced. Near two thirds of studied patients weren’t working and had insufficient income (63.4%) and (63.3%) respectively. Conclusion: Current study shows that age, gender, marital status, education, family income, area of residence and other socio demographic and clinical data are associated with the severity of depression. Recommendation: This study will be helpful for the management and assortment of depressed patients with more accuracy based on their socio-demographic features..
