Sleep Disturbances among Pregnant Women and its Associated Factors

Abstract

Background: Sleep Disturbances among pregnant women associated with several hormonal, physiologic, physical, and behavioral changes that lead to disturbances in sleep architecture, quality, and duration. In addition, pregnancy can affect preexisting sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Aim: This study aimed to assess sleep disturbances among pregnant women and its associated factors. Design: A descriptive cross sectional study design was used. Setting: The study was conducted in outpatient clinics at New Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Mansoura City, Egypt. Subjects: A purposive sample of 267 women was included. Tools: structured interview questionnaire, Pittsburg sleep quality index (PSQI). Results: This study revealed that majority of the studied pregnant women had bad sleep quality score, more than half of them had a very bad subjective sleep quality more than one third of them had 5-6 hours sleep duration, less than one quarter of them had <65% sleep efficiency and more than half of them had score 2 sleep disturbance. Moreover, the majority of the studied pregnant women had frequency in urination, low back pain, headache, pica and anxiety are factors lead to sleep disturbances, Conclusion: The majority of the studied pregnant women had bad sleep quality score, frequency in urination, low back pain, headache, pica and anxiety are factors lead to sleep disturbances. Recommendation: All pregnant women should be screened and treated for poor sleep quality especially during third trimester of pregnancy
