Effect of Ilizarov Nursing Care Guidelines on Nurses' Competency

Abstract

Background: Ilizarov is the most popular fixation method for treatment of lower extremity inequality and fracture. Increasing orthopedic nurses' competency is an important perquisite to engage patient in self-care after Ilizarov surgery. Aim: Evaluate effect of Ilizarov nursing care guidelines on Nurses’ competency. Methodology: A quasi experimental research was used. Setting: The study was conducted at orthopedic departments at Main Mansoura University Hospital Study subjects: A convenient sample of (n=50) nurses that works in orthopedic department. Tools: two tools: (I) A structured interview questionnaire. Tool (II): Ilizarov nurses' observational checklist. Results: Following the implementation of guidelines, the majority of nurses demonstrated good knowledge level and a satisfactory level of practice. Additionally In post-implementation of guidelines and follow-up, there was a positive correlation between overall knowledge and overall practice. Conclusion: The study concluded that nurses' knowledge and practice have been successfully improved after Ilizarov nursing care guidelines implementation regarding Ilizarov. Recommendation: Availability of written guidelines regarding Ilizarov nursing care in orthopedic units.
