The Interactive Influences of Time Pressure and Job Conscientiousness on Patient Safety

Abstract

Nowadays organizations are extremely concerned about factors that impact patient safety. Time pressure is an threaten
variable for it consequently nurse should have job conscientiousness trait to decrease time pressure and improve patient
safety. Aim: To investigate the interactive influences of time pressure and job conscientiousness on patient safety among
staff nurses at Oncology Center- Mansoura University. Methods: Descriptive correlational design was utilized. Three
tools were used to gather the data; time pressure questionnaire, job conscientiousness questionnaire and patient safety
questionnaire. Results: The majority of staff nurses complain of time pressure, had high level of job conscientiousness
and had moderate level of perception about patient safety. Also, there is highly statistically significant positive
correlation between job conscientiousness and patient safety, while there was no relationship between time pressure level
and patient safety level. Recommendation: Establishing a favorable work environment by providing sufficient nursing
staff and resources to enhance nurses’ ability to deal with work demands and workloads. Encouraging nurses to share
responsibility in multimodal team that enhances job conscientiousness. Also, Conduct of education programs for staff
nurses continuously on patient safety . Further study: There is a need for further studies of research about the effect of
time pressure and job conscientiousness on organizational citizenship behavior, work life, burnout, turnover and quality
of care.
